Do long term disability insurance companies use surveillance to “checkup” on claimants?

"Is there a chance my insurance company will use surveillance against me?"

Yes. Although some cases justify surveillance, many do not. In these matters, surveillance is essentially a fishing expedition by the insurance company. If you see a unknown car parked near your residence with a person sitting in it for extended periods of time, you are permitted to call the police. Many times, the surveillance company will have called the policy to notify them of their presence, and the policy may be able to tell you why the vehicle is parked. If you suspect surveillance, do not approach the vehicle yourself. Emotions can easily take hold in such a situation, and the insurance company’s description of such an interaction to the insurer may not paint a claimant or their limitations in the proper light.
