"Can I work and collect social security at the same time?"
Claimants are permitted to work while on SSDI, but there are limitations as to what can be earned. In 2018, earnings above $1,180 per month prelude the payment of benefits. This figure includes gross earnings, before taxes or other deductions.
We recommend claimants limits their earnings to no more than $800 per month to avoid triggering programs that may limit one's term ability to receive benefits. Furthermore, total hours should also be limited to no more than 25 hours per week, and preferably no more than 20 hours per week. You should contact your SSDI attorney prior to returning to work, even part time, to ensure that you are aware of the impact employment may have on your benefits.
